Keeping a promise

Three years ago, audiences at the Darien Arts Center were privileged to be the first to see Libby Skala's one-woman show, Lilia!, inspired by the life of her award-winning grandmother, actress Lilia Skala.

Well known in Europe, the Viennese actress, who escaped from the Nazi regime, didn't find it easy to continue her career after emigrating from Austria to the United States in 1939, but she succeeded, and won an Academy Award [nomination] for her role as a nun in the 1963 film, Lilies of the Field, that also won the same award for Sidney Poitier.

Grandmother and granddaughter were very close until Lilia Skala died in 1994 at the age of 97.

When she visited, Libby Skala was encouraged by her grandmother to write a play and "include a part for me," and the result is the one-woman show now receiving accolades wherever it is presented, with Libby Skala performing all the roles.

The young actress was invited to the Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival... and Lilia! was ... reviewed favorably by New York Times theater critic Bruce Weber.

In New York, Libby Skala's one-woman show was popular with viewers at the Midtown International Theater Festival at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex in Manhttan.

Libby Skala's acting in her one-woman show has not gone unnoticed by casting directors, and recently won her a small role in an upcoming Nicole Kidman film.  Ms. Skala also has plans for more appearances in her own show that offers a loving tribute to her famous grandmother.
